Sea World presents a charming day…with a catch

January 4, 2012

I am surrounded by Cookie Monster, Elmo and Bert, as they dance to a catchy tune about letters and numbers. For a moment, I think about throwing caution to the wind and join in the two step. The furry creatures that taught me the ABCs are now paving the path for the next generation and I can’t really control myself.

The smiles on our children’s faces are as wide as Texas.

The live shows were a dazzling display of beauty and strength.

Recently, the family spent a spectacular day at Sea World San Antonio on a mild late summer day. The sun beat loud and proud on that day.

This treasured day, however, almost didn’t happen.

Our plan was simple:

-Open the doors to the park at 10am.

-Stay until exhaustion beat us down.

The skies on that particular Saturday morning, however, were hostile. Drizzle and fog dampened all spirits. The previous night’s rain, thunder and lightning displays were legendary.

After a few hours of wishing, hoping, praying that the rain would stop, we caught a break.

The skies lightened just enough to let us into the park around noon.

Despite our late start, we were ambitious about our pursuit of trying every ride, coaster, game that was available at Sea World San Antonio. With the park featuring Halloween hours and events (until 10pm), we believed that we had plenty of time to ‘give it a go’.

We petted the sting rays, bobbed and weaved on the Shamu Express roller coaster, laughed on the merry-go-round, and marveled at the artistry and acrobatics of Azul. Azul was a major departure from your typical dolphin show. Talented professionals swam, dove, climbed, soared against a majestic backdrop of light, color, sound.  Unbelievable.

Even I tested his nerves on the jaw-dropping Steel Eel. As I made the slow, methodical incline prior to the ride’s steepest drop, I wondered, “Why am I doing this?” When it was over, I was ready to do it again!

Then, unexpectedly at 5pm, we heard this over the park’s loudspeaker:

“Attention please; because of inclement weather earlier in the day, the park will be closing at 6pm today. All Hallowscream activities are cancelled for tonight.”

The words: “What?”, “Huh?” could be heard reverberating around the park.

This was a surprise in the worst way.

I realize weather plays a significant role in the unpredictable schedules of most of these amusements parks, yet we wouldn’t have made the decision to enter the park around noon (at full price!) if we knew the day was only six hours long instead of ten hours. With the sky clearing, it didn’t cross our mind that the park would close early.

Most likely, we’ll return to Six Flags San Antonio for some stupendous fun. This bout of unfortunate, nearly unfathomable, news probably put a frown on the furry faces of Cookie Monster, Elmo and Bert as well as on the faces of the Austin visitors.

Until next time,

Hyatt’s Lost Pines: THE place to vacation near Austin

February 24, 2010

Nestled amongst the ‘Lost Pines’ of Central Texas is a true gem — the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa. My wife and I had a chance to chill for a few days at this beautiful, rustic destination.

I had visited this location once before for a convention, so I was very aware of the allure of the scenery. Being there for ‘business’ was good, but ‘pleasure time’ was ‘AAAAAHHHHHHH’.

3 ‘experiences’ soar to the top from a memorable weekend.

Giddy-up: It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and the Hyatt presents a litany of options for the ‘relaxed’ guest: rafting, archery, kayaking, and much more. The most appealing selection for us on that day was horseback riding. My wife and I had ‘limited’ rides under our belts, yet we loved the special trail ride adjacent to the majestic Wolfdancer Golf Club (next time — I’ll bring my clubs!). The people at ‘Renegade Trailhead‘ were extremely helpful and kind to us horse riding ‘newbies’.

S mores: Both nights of our stay offered a dessert that spells: OUTDOORS. Melt a marshmallow over the fire; surround it with a piece of decadent chocolate and a crunchy graham cracker and you’ve got a S MORE. Nothing equals Texas under the stars like munchin’ a s more by a cracklin’ fire. Unbelievable.

Trails in every direction: If you have a few days to visit the Lost Pines Resort, bring your hiking boots. Take a casual stroll alongside the lazy Colorado River or push your endurance with a longer push through the nearby McKinney Roughs Nature Park. The ‘accommodations’ are exceptional, but you’ll be immediately drawn to the meandering trails at every turn.

I highly recommend the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa. As a ‘customer’, I was engaged and satisfied throughout my stay.

Oh, one last thing: Tell ‘Scarface’ (my horse) that I said ‘hello’.

I can’t wait to visit again soon.

Until next time,

Mighty Fine Hamburgers: Now That’s Good Eatin’

February 1, 2010

Mighty Fine Hamburgers: A lunch time place with a buzz that’s strong as an alarm clock at 6am.

When I visit a lunch-time venue, I usually evaluate it based on 3 criteria:
1.    Quality of food
2.    Cleanliness
3.    Atmosphere

Mighty Fine Hamburgers, located in North Austin’s Arbor walk shopping center, scores big on all counts.

Quality: I like a menu that’s simple and straightforward. MF Hamburgers does not disappoint. This place does not stray from burgers and dogs and it displays no reason to ‘branch out’. I had the burger and fries and loved it!  The burger, brimming with lettuce, tomato, and onions, was tasty and ‘right-sized’. It was a good size to slay my appetite, but did not ‘overdo it’.

Cleanliness: The floors were clean and the tables had that shiny ‘pull up a chair’ look. I was impressed that the staff was diligent and quick to clean a mess from a departed guest. Everything felt ‘FRESH and NEW’ about this establishment. Let’s hope time does not wear off these alluring characteristics.

Atmosphere: By 12:15pm on a weekday afternoon, this place was ALIVE. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house. Word has quickly spread that this place delivers a fine meal. From a ‘sneak peak’ into the burger prep area to the casual cafeteria-style tables, Mighty Fine Hamburgers puts a solid meal experience first and ‘accessories’ a distant second.

I give a BIG ‘thumbs up’ to Mighty Fine Hamburgers in Austin, Texas.

Note: Check out the Mighty Fine Video Remix:
It’s a short commercial clip that goes beyond clever.

When Twitter Does Not Work

August 22, 2009

I was at a local conference recently and everyone was ‘Tweeting’. Laptops, Iphones, and Blackberries were ablaze with quick posts for their loyal followers. This, in itself, is not startling – Twitter is common, especially in a high-tech market like Austin, Texas.

The conference I attended featured numerous high-quality speakers on product management and product marketing. Unfortunately, many of the attendees were tweeting during the presentations. I found this highly disrespectful to the presenters and distracting for those in the audience who were there for the content. It was very hard to stay in the present with the speakers when your neighbor was chiming away on his keyboard (and he wasn’t taking notes!!) The speakers worked very hard to build some outstanding presentations only to have audience members more interested in their short bursts of wisdom. I believe this is a major misstep for the ‘always on’ culture that becomes more omnipresent with each passing day.

Until next time,

A U2 Concert Video You’ll Never Forget

July 10, 2008

“All is quiet on New Year’s Day.”
“A world in white gets underway.”

These two phrases are immediately recognized by a large portion of this population. These are lyrics from U2’s classic song, “New Year’s Day”. Don’t they have like 15 songs that could be considered classics?

I had a chance to see and experience U2’s Concert Video at Austin’s Bob Bullock Museum; I highly recommend that you see this show.

Bono’s singing and audience interactions were a thing of legend; you truly felt him reach into your seat with the 3d effects. (Don’t be embarrassed about the overly large glasses.) Bono knows how to engage an audience and is certainly one of the leading music frontmen of all-time. Edge’s guitar playing rang, jangled and jammed throughout the packed Buenos Aires soccer stadium.

The Argentinean crowd throbbed and pulsed their way through the 80-minute set; U2 was visibly floored by the commitment and vocal harmonies of the thousands who saw this event live.

Austinites – Listen up!!
Here’s a link to the ‘colorful’ concert schedule from the museum’s site: http://www.localendar.com/public/tshm (You better hurry; this weekend looks like the last one for the show.) This is definitely a ‘can’t miss’ event.

U2 believes in what they do.
U2 is a true group (not a bunch of individuals).
U2 works hard each night to give its audience the very best.
We can learn from this in our personal and professional lives.

Until next time..
