Can a fireworks show make you think differently about your customers?

Ooohhhhhh.

Ahhhhhh

WOW!

The crowd echoed in unison as fireworks lit up the night sky all over this great nation this past weekend.

As my daughter and I walked towards our favorite viewing spot, she was thrilled to see one of her best friends nearby. Any proud Dad can tell you, there’s nothing like the smile on your daughter’s face when she realizes that she gets to share this experience not only with her Dad, but also with one of her friends as well.

My daughter and I had a glorious time covering our ears when the ‘BOOMS’ got too loud and pointing out all the myriad colors that hid beneath each firework. She and her friend just could not stop the giggles.

Every year, I marvel at the choreography that goes into each and every show. To the crowd, it appears to be a random ‘scattershot’ of explosions, but to those ‘behind the curtain’; it is a highly scripted emotional rollercoaster.

Did you ever notice that about half way into each fireworks show there is a ‘false ending’? The rockets start quickly flying with fury and the explosions become much more frequent. Many in the crowd reach a crescendo and start filing for the exits, but the rockets just keep shooting.

Why?

Why does this happen again and again at every fireworks show in America?

The answer: Overdeliver.

You thought the fireworks show was ending, but the fun just kept on coming and the rockets kept firing. Your emotions went from the peak of enjoyment to the realization that it’s over and back again; a veritable roller coaster for hearts and minds.

What are you doing to overdeliver?
What are you doing to leave your customers ‘wanting more’ and then giving it to them?
What are you doing to ‘blow your customers’ expectations’ away?

Keep ‘overdeliver’ in mind and your customers will be the ones saying ‘WOW‘!

Until next time,
Dan
